Chaplain's Corner: You Can Be Forgiven
In the last two newsletters, we talked about forgiving those who have hurt us, betrayed us or deeply disappointed us in some way. This month I would like to talk to us about our own need for forgiveness.
There is no question that all of us have hurt others, perhaps betrayed others or deeply disappointed others in some way. And, I think if we are truly honest with ourselves, we know that we need forgiveness from God and from people we have hurt.
The Bible says that "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." That means none of us have lived up to who God created us to be. The Bible also says that "If we say we have not sinned, we deceive ourselves and there is no truth in us." And when we sin against God and people, it breaks our relationship with both God and people. Thankfully, God is loving and merciful and eager to forgive us and to re-establish a relationship with us, no matter what we have done.
Think about that. No matter what we have done in the past, even those things that we are ashamed of and we hope no one would ever know about us, God is willing to forgive. He is willing to do this because He already paid the penalty for our sin, which is separation from God, upon Jesus Christ. It says in the Bible, "For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God." All we have to do is admit to God that we need His forgiveness, ask Jesus to come live in our hearts and cleanse our hearts from all unrighteousness. Jesus will be faithful to actually come to live inside you so you can begin to experience His presence, His forgiveness and His peace. You can be forgiven.
