In May of 2013, my son was born. Like all mothers, I wanted the best for him and my family. That's when I really started to evaluate everything I used, from skin care products to the products I cleaned with in my home. I wanted my house to be clean and healthy, not only for Evan, but for myself too. As Evan got mobile I got scared... everything went into his mouth... EVERYTHING! That's when I knew things needed to change. I needed safe products that weren't toxic but would still do the job. That included the products I was using from lotions to soaps to bug spray! The things I was using were chemical-based... made up to cover or mask problems. I wasn't using products that treated the problem or corrected it. This was just the surface of what I started evaluating in my life.
Then I attended an event that talked about doTERRA, an essential oil company, and how I could makeover my medicine cabinet and the diaper bag. I learned that essential oils are pure and SAFE!!!!
So let's start with what is an essential oil?
Essential oils are natural compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. An oil is "essential" in the sense that it contains the characteristic fragrance of the plant from which it is taken. According to doTERRA, they can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. Think of a smelling a rose, lavender or mint - this scent is the same experience you have when smelling essential oils. However, more importantly, according to doTERRA, essential oils also provide plants with protection against predators and disease, and play a role in pollination.
Essential oils are non-water-based phytochemicals made up of volatile aromatic compounds. Although they are fat soluble, they do not include fatty lipids or acids found in vegetable and animal oils. Essential oils are clean, almost crisp, to the touch and are immediately absorbed by the skin, much like squeezing an orange on your hand – the fragrant residue is full of essential oils. Essential oils are usually administered by one of three methods: diffused aromatically, applied topically, or taken internally as dietary supplements.
While essential oils have been used throughout history for medicinal and therapeutic benefits, a modern desire for a more holistic approach to wellness has brought on a revival of use of essential oils.
I started to make small changes in my life. For example, I made my own face lotion and liked the result, so I tried my hand at making multipurpose kitchen cleaner. It worked too! Then I made a diaper rash cream for Evan and it was better than anything I've bought in the stores. I've continued trying new recipes with essentials, but have loved the benefits they provide my family.
Since I started with essential oils it's changed the way I look at my family's health care. Believe me, this does not and should not take the place of a doctor or proper medical care… but for me and my family, essential oils have found a place to help us from a preventative measure.
While I use doTERRA, there are other companies who manufacture and distribute other essential oil options, so if you are interested, I welcome you to research essential oils as I did and see if they are a good fit for your life. I'm also here to talk about the benefits essential oils have made in my life and my family's life if you have any questions. Please feel free to reach out!
